Origin of the word Monte

  1. "gambling card game," 1824, from Sp. monte "mountain," from L. montem (nom. mons), see mount (v.). So called from the heap of cards left after dealing. A favorite in California during the gold rush years. The three-card form (first attested 1877) is of Mexican origin.
